ITIL Service Management: Training for ITIL Certification


The ITIL® v3 qualification scheme is based on a credit system that leads to the individual gaining the Expert Certificate in IT Service Management.


Credits for ITIL® Certification

You need a minimum of twenty-two credits, across a balanced selection of v3 subject areas, to gain the certificate.

Although the Intermediate and Lifecycle courses have a different focus, there are similarities in some of the courses.   Therefore it is strongly recommended that you choose the v3 qualifications which are complementary to any qualifications you may currently hold.   This will help you to achieve a balanced ITIL knowledge base, as well as gaining the credits you need to achieve the ITIL® Expert Certificate.

Any ITIL version 1 or ITIL version 2 certificates you have already gained will also have credits associated with them, and you can add to these with either v3 'Bridging' qualifications, or by successfully completing further v3 modules.

Levels of ITIL® Qualifications

The ITIL® Qualifications scheme uses a 'modular' approach to the ITIL framework, composed of a series of qualifications focused on different aspects of ITIL® Best Practice, to various degrees of depth and detail.


There are four levels of qualifications within the scheme:

  • ITIL Foundation in IT Service Management
  • ITIL Intermediate Level
  • ITIL Expert
  • ITIL Master Qualification

This structure not only offers you flexibility in relation to the different disciplines and areas of ITIL®, but generally makes ITIL® qualifications more accessible and achievable.
