Overcoming nerves

There can be no doubt that the job of speaking or presenting to an audience is a very intimidating prospect for many people, and overcoming nerves can be the first thing they need to do. This is often simply a matter of banishing preconceptions, and training can help here by showing simple ways to accomplish this.

Then attention can be paid to the real benefits of good presentation skills.

Presentation skills apply everywhere

The Sales environment is the first that might occur to you as a place where this is required. The need to present a winning case for your customer to choose you for their goods or services is probably the most high profile scenario, and one which -- rightly -- attracts the most attention. The difference between a salesperson who is effective in this situation and one who isn't can make or break a sales activity, let alone a person's career.

But there are many other situations where presentation skills come into play. You may need to deliver presentations to senior management, work colleagues or those you manage. Sometimes this is an ad hoc or even one-off requirement. Here, too, the person who can present well will be more successful than the one who can't -- even if the occasion is not directly related to an immediate objective.

There is also the job interview, and this applies to both interviewer as well as the interviewee. Much is rightly made of the need for a job candidate to give the right impression, and some jobs -- especially in sales or at a management level -- can involve a presentation of some kind. But it is important for the hirer to give a good account of themselves, too, and when recruiting for senior positions, they will often face questions that are best fielded in a way that inspires confidence and optimism, albeit in a much more informal way.

Don't forget personal situations too. It's not too much of a stretch to apply these thoughts to social occasions, where these skills will of course apply more to how you conduct yourself or address people than to any kind of structured activity.

You will (almost) always win !

This isn't to say that good presentation skills will win every time. Sometimes, the audience has already made up their minds, or through no fault of yours, you can't actually give them what they want. But if you present well, you will leave a good impression anyway, which is never a bad thing. And in the fullness of time, you will find that the acquisition and continual development of presenting skills will win you more allies, success, and self esteem, than if you choose to muddle through.

The need for training

So training in how to deliver presentations is a key to success at an organisational, career and personal level. With that knowledge on board, your task is to find the right people to deliver it for you.

More about training with Activia

With Activia, you can check your skill level (see the button above on the right) which ensures you book on the correct course.   This facility is also invaluable when putting together training programmes or bespoke courses for numbers of delegates.

You can also build your own Presentation Skills course (click the button above on the right) to suit your own or your company project requirements, incorporating the modules which cover the subjects you want to learn.
