Why is supervisor training needed?

If trained properly, a staff supervisor will be able to monitor and manage performance, provide constructive, effective feedback, handle delicate situations assertively, and mentor new personnel so they become valuable members of the team.

It is therefore important that supervisors receive adequate support and training so they maximise the performance of their team. Conversely, failure to ensure that they have the proper skills and knowledge to carry out their role can have a negative effect on the motivation and productivity of those whom they supervise.

The focus need not just be on new supervisors of course. People already in a supervisory role may not have had formal training, and allowing them to attend a course can provide focus and new perspective, even if as a "refresher".
